‘Ready to wait five more years...’: Abhaya’s parents claim evidence lost or erased ahead of verdict

The RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case, which has garnered significant attention, is set to reach its conclusion with a verdict on January 18, 2025. The case centers around the rape and murder of a trainee doctor, Abhaya, whose body was discovered in the hospital's seminar room on August 9, 2024. The incident led to widespread protests across the nation, particularly from medical professionals who demanded better security and a fair investigation into the case.

The investigation was initially handled by local police before the case was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was arrested in August, and charged with the rape and murder of Abhaya. Roy has been identified as the primary accused in the case. The CBI’s investigation concluded that Roy was the sole perpetrator of the crime, and the agency has requested the death penalty for him, arguing that he committed the crime alone.

The victim’s parents have raised significant concerns regarding the investigation, accusing the authorities of mishandling evidence and failing to thoroughly investigate other potential suspects. They allege that critical evidence was lost or tampered with during the investigation, hindering the pursuit of justice. Additionally, they claim that other individuals who may have been involved in the crime were not apprehended and were seen loitering freely at the hospital after the incident. Abhaya’s parents have stated that they believe the investigation was incomplete, with more work needed to fully uncover the truth behind their daughter's death.

The CBI’s investigation, after being handed over the case by the Calcutta High Court, focused primarily on Roy as the sole suspect. However, despite his arrest, questions about the involvement of other individuals remain. Abhaya’s parents continue to call for a more thorough examination of all potential leads, including the involvement of others who might have been present at the crime scene. They also criticized the handling of the crime scene, pointing out that several individuals were present at the location when the body was discovered, which raised concerns about the integrity of the investigation process.

With the Sealdah court scheduled to deliver its verdict on January 18, all eyes are on the legal outcome of the case. The court will decide on the charges against Roy, including the CBI’s recommendation for the death penalty. The case has brought attention to the flaws in the investigation and the handling of evidence, but the final judgment will ultimately determine the legal consequences for Roy and whether the investigation will be considered complete or require further action to address other potential suspects involved in Abhaya’s death.
